American Idol Top 36 Recap

February 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So I’ve been in South America for two weeks. Most of the hotels I stayed at had an American newspaper printed up each morning which (thank God) DID include American Idol tidbits and gave me my fix. Regardless, the first thing I did when I got back was catch up on my Simon. Here’s a summary of the good and totally weird moments:

Group 1

When Seacrest is doing his “suspense” thing with the results, there’s always some creepy instrumental music in the background. But this is the first time in many seasons I’ve noticed the weird moaning. Did anyone else notice that? It sounded like zombies.

Tatiana Del Toro. Wow. What is with that weird head movement when she was done with her song? Even though I think she’s the most annoying person in the world, I actually thought she did pretty good and has a good voice. But that head movement just totally ruined it. I wanted to reach through the computer and bitch slap her. Also, her weird plea at the end was TOTALLY out of line. If we learned anything from Heba and Ed from Biggest Loser Couples, it’s let American do it’s thang…don’t try to beg for survival! It’s no surprise that she was kicked off, especially when paired with superstar Danny Gokey during the results, and it’s also no surprise that even in her exit she stuck to her drama-queen ways and tried to steal the scene from Danny. I was laughing out loud when they shuffled her off the stage and only focused on her periodically during Danny’s song crying in the corner. hahaha.

I have to take a moment to give a shout out to Season 7 contestant Carly Smithson, who in my opinion blows most of Season 8’s contestants out of the water. She NEVER should have gotten kicked off as early as she did last year….bring Carly back!

I was heartbroken when Anoop Desai was kicked off. I think the way they are doing it this season is kinda messed up, because we really don’t get to see much of the performers. The good thing though, is that the judgest get to pick three wildcard contestants to enter back into the competition. I’m pretty confident that Anoop will be one of these contestants. Even though the song was kinda random, his voice is great and he definitely deserves another shot.

I don’t really think anyone else from Group 1 is worth mentioning…..the rest kind of sucked.

Group 2

Jasmine Murray sang Love Song by Sarah Bareilles and I totally disagreed with the judges on this one. I really liked it! I thought she put a different diva spin on it and I think she’s got a good voice. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s another Wildcard contestant.

Matt. Giraud. Baby. They had to pull me off the ledge on this one because I knew you were going home. This guy is unbelievable but picked a TERRIBLE song for his voice. He was also ridiculously nervous and you could totally tell. I still think Matt is in the top three most talented people on the show but I had no doubt after this performance that he was a goner. Randy…Paula…Kara…and Simon…PLEASE BRING MATT BACK!!!!!

And then there’s Nick Mitchell a.k.a. Norman Gentile or Mangina or whatever is name is. This guy is a total moron. Why? Because he actually has a pretty good voice but insists on making a mockery out of the competition with his ridiculous act. Don’t get me wrong…he was fun and entertaining. But would I ever buy his album, go to his concert, or tune in to him on TV? Abso-freaking-lutely NOT. I prayed one more hour than Simon that Nick does not get to come back on the show. Best of luck to you Mangina.

Allison Iraheta has got a great voice, but I completely agree with Simon in that her personality sucks. She’s the typical teenage anti-mainstream anti-everything girl with a bad attitude. She could go real far in this competition…but needs a personality check real fast.

Kris Allen made it through to the top 12. I was actually pretty shocked about this. I mean, his voice is pretty good, but overall I’d say he’s pretty boring. Too boring to post, in fact.

Megan Joy Corkery had this weird butt shake thing going on. She kind of reminds me of my friend Dayna when I used to teach her how to dance in like 5th grade. In other words, she reminded me of a child with special needs. Aside from the dancing though, she had a lot of trouble hitting those high notes. She started off OK but really lost it at the end. I’d be annoyed if she got back on the show.

I actually disagreed with the judges yet again regarding Matt Breitzke’s performance. I really like that song and thought he did an OK job, but not good enough to make it through to the top 12 for sure. So I was not surprised at all that he took a seat after the results. The advice I would give him, yet again, is DON’T TALK BACK TO THE JUDGES! Just let American decide. Jeez. If he makes it back, I hope it’s not just because he’s blue collar or whatever. I’m way over that angle.

Kai Kalama: Good voice, terrible shirt, looks like Sideshow Bob.

One last time during this episode I completely disagreed with the judges again regarding Mishavonna Henson.  I really liked this girl. She sang drops of Jupiter, a favorite song of mine, and I thougth she sang it very well. The judges thought she was too serious and wasn’t being “young” enough. I could not disagree more! I think she’s got a great voice and I could really see her being a recording artist. It pisses me off that girls like this almost don’t make it on the show, and they waste space on Normangina.

Without seeing Group 3, at this point in the game my money is still on Danny Gokey. His amazing voice combined with heartbreaking story makes him  surefire bet. Anothing thing I noticed is that a lot of contestants this year are single moms. Before I audition next year it looks like I might have to get impregnated.

American Idol Solos – Hollywood Week

February 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Matt Giraud…freaking unbelievable. If he has an album I will be the first to buy it. His song choice was amazing, his piano skillz were amazing, and his voice is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I know he’s going to make it and I can’t wait to see him perform again.

Danny Gokey…amazing singer, not too crazy about his song choice. But even worse was his shirt choice. Those of us with sweaty tendancies know that the LAST color shirt to wear when you’re nervous let alone performing is GRAY. did you see those massive sweaty pit stains????? Fast forward to 1:08 to see the pits, or watch Danny’s buddy Jamar from the beginning….he’s pretty good too.

Wuddup ANOOP? Ok i’m a huge fan of this guy. He kinda reminds me of the head of the math club from Mean Girls, K evin Gnapoor. “Math Club Enthusiast/Badass MC”. No doubt he’s gonna get to Hollywood and represent his people…they need some redeeming after Sanjaya Malakar.

Anoop Desai

Anoop Desai

Michael Sarver…So cute!!! Not that this matters in a singing competition, but he’s lost a little weight and I think he’s gotten super cute! Totally my type.  Not to mention his voice is amazing. He will for sure get to Hollywood week, no doubt.

I was REALLY surprised that Laneisha Young didn’t make it….like, really surprised. I hope she gets picked up by a label real soon because I think she’s got a lot of talent.  Best of luck to you!!!!!!

My Favorite Grammy Moments

February 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Overall I really enjoyed this year’s Grammys. I like how they mixed old with new and I was happy to see a large amount of both hip hop and pop performances. Here’s a few of my favorite moments from last night’s Grammy Awards.

Swagga Like Us
This performance was both sick in a good way and sick as in I don’t want to see your baby pop out of you on stage. In addition to Kanye West, T.I., Jay Z, and Lil’ Wayne, this  performance featured a ridiculously prego MIA wearing a mesh leotard with polka dots covering her boobs and giant baby bump. I understand it’s her song……but c’mon.  She was lip syncing anyways and should have been watching the Grammys from the comfort of her hospital bed. I also didn’t really get why it was in black and white.

Jonas Brothers Mess-Up
I’ve never actually seen a Jonas Brothers performance but I can say with certainty that if it was socially acceptable that I would have a huge crush on them. That is until, however, one of the bros messed up the words to Stevie Wonder. It reminded me of last season’s American Idol when Brooke kept messing up famous songs and starting over.  Poor kid. He’s never going to live that one down. I can’t seem to find a video of this performance…every YouTube video has been “removed due to copywright claim by Grammys”. Iiiinteresting…..conspiracy?

Lil Wayne featuring Robin Thicke: Tie My Hands
This was an amazing performance. Not because someone fucked up. Not because someone wore a freaking fugly outfit. Robin Thicke is AMAZING and so is Lil’ Wayne. LOVE. Robbie….can I call you Robbie?….I hear you’re married. That sucks.

Other highlights:

  • Whitney Houston sounding a little coked out during her opening speech. She was huffin’ and puffin’ just to get the envelope open. She did look great though.
  • Jennifer Hudson’s dress- I thought it was super cute. Others thought it looked like a lobster bib.
  • Kanye’s mohalk/mullet- I will hereby call it a mullhawk
  • Performances by Justin Timberlake and Ne-Yo- both amazing
  • lots of silver glitter- Kanye’s suit, Estelle’s dress, Gwyneth’s dress….I really hope it isn’t a spring fashion preview

Shirt or Dress?

February 9, 2009 · 1 Comment

This past weekend I attended the Bat Mitzvah of my cousin in Westchester County, NY. These are some pretty classy 13-year-olds, so thankfully I didn’t see too much of this, but there’s always at least one close call…I’m talking about the girl that wears the shirt-dress a.k.a. No Pants McGee. The fabric covers the butt (barely), but one swift dance move and there could be a crotch incident. Is it a shirt? Is it a dress? Is it a tunic? What is a tunic, technically? These are all great questions. But the best question, I think, is how in the hell do parents let their kids out of the house wearing these mystery articles of clothing?

Here’s a few Facebook groups dedicated to raising awareness about this cause:

Shirt or Dress?

that’s a shirt not a dress ho!!!!

Email Addresses

February 6, 2009 · 1 Comment

I just got done hiring for an Entry Level Sales Associate, and of course many applicants were recent college graduates. It doesn’t cease to amaze me the ridiculous email addresses that these kids have on their resumes. Yes, I’m only 26. But anyone who does something this ridic I will refer to as a kid. I seriously question whether they actually had any schooling above kindergarten, let alone graduated from college. Take xxlauraxx@yahoo.com for example. Laura, this is an office, not the Vu. We have poles in our office and I’d be scared that you would strip all up on them. Next there’s kegstand24@hotmail.com. Really??? Like, are you mental? I don’t even know what to say. I’m sure you’re a fun guy and all, but would I trust you with my compensation? Ha. Yeah right.

Group Day

February 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Group day was back this season after a year’s hiatus. Now, if I was an AI contestant (which someday I hope to be), I would HATE group day. Just like I hated group projects in school. Why work with a group when you can do it better and faster yourself? But I will say that Wednesday’s episode of group day was amazing. The train wrecks were even more wrecked, and the fantastic singers were even more fantastic.

One of my favorite performances was the group White Chocolate, featuring The Next Justin Timberlake himself, K-zoo native Matt Giraud. Their voices were amazing and the arrangement was unique. Big fan of the rap. I think I would probably rap if I made it to Hollywood week.

My all time favorite of the night was the group that went a cappella, featuring David Gokey, the guy who lost his wife right before auditions. It’s tragic to even think about that so I’m going to focus on how fucking amazing this guy is. This group sang a song recently downloaded on my iPod, Somebody to Love by Queen. The version I have though is Brittany Murphy from Happy Feet. That is a GREAT movie. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It was on On-Demand a few weeks ago and I think I rocked out to it about 4 times. It’s about a really cute little penguin name Mumble who can’t find his love song….he can only tap dance. LOVE IT!!!

Now let’s talk about the train wrecks. Tatiana del Toro- that girl is fucking insane. I’m SHOCKED that she got through to the next round. Not only is she the absolute most annoying person ever with the most annoying laugh, but she just plain SUCKS. She tried to sing again right before the judges’ evaluation, and they were like “bitch, don’t even”. It was great.

And finally there was Team Compromise made up of Kristen McNamara, Nancy Wilson, and Nathaniel Marshall. Now at first I thought Kristen was being a little bit of a pussy for not rehearsing…but then once Nancy and Nathaniel got all riled up, I TOTALLY got her. Holy Jesus…I’ve never been one to deal nicely with drama queens. I definitely would have had to whoop some ass that night and slap Nathanial and Nancy up a little. My question is, how did Kristen get stuck with that group in the first place? She’s clearly amazing and I think that if she had been in a group with any half-decent singers, they all would have benefited from it. She must be a snotty bitch or something.

Hooray for Doritos

February 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Overall I was pretty dissapointed with the Superbowl commercials. Way too many cars. Way too many movies. And way too many NBC commercials (although some of those were funnier than non-NBC commercials…is funnier a word?). But one brand that stood above the rest with two commercials that made me at least laugh out loud once was Doritos. The first commercial, Crystal Ball, was absolutely amazing. Nothing makes me laugh harder than people getting hit in the balls. The second commercial was kind of lame (seen this idea before), until the end when the guy got hit by the bus. That was unexpected and HILARIOUS. Hmm….I’m starting to notice a theme here…I also thought the guy in it was pretty good.

And finally, the third Doritos commercial that apparently aired during the Superbowl although I don’t recall ever seeing it. It’s pretty funny and, personally, I think it’s a great idea.

Ode to Luke

February 4, 2009 · 3 Comments

Brody Jenner made his long-awaited decision yesterday and chose Bostonite Luke Verge as his new bff/bromance. This was no surprise as I suspected Luke would win the entire time. Luke is funny, hot, a blast, and seemed like a genuine good friend to Brody and others. I congratulate you, Luke, and present to you a short poem. Call me.

Luke Verge from Bromance...winner!!

Oh how I love Luke from Boston

With his argyle sweaters and polo,

And he is super hot.

But you and I could have a real romance

and produce a lil’ tot.

So have fun in Hollywood, Luke

with your parties and new found fame,

I’ll be here blogging about you

and meeting other boys a lot more lame.
